Senior Director of Foundation Relations

Essential Functions

  • Work closely in consultation with administration, deans, department heads and the Executive Director of Foundation Relations to identify and establish personal contact with local, regional and national foundations whose interest and financial capacity have the greatest likelihood of strategically meeting the Unit and University fundraising goals.
  • Orchestrate and execute the advancement of relationships with Foundation through appropriate stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff to develop prospect strategies and build relationships.
  • Build and manage an active portfolio of prospective foundation partners that are regularly reviewed and engaged
  • Build relationships with foundation program officers and staff as appropriate to effectively advance toward proposal development and submission, as well as, effective post award stewardship.
  • Set specific objectives to effectively advance relationships with private foundations.
  • Ensure appropriate coordination between Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships office, Sponsored Program Services, and the business offices of the University in implementing foundation grants and gifts.
  • Manage cross-disciplinary and large-scale foundation proposals across multiple unites and areas.
  • Prepare proposals and solicit prospects for gifts in support of University fundraising priorities.
  • Become familiar with and understand key initiatives of the university’s faculty, students, instruction and research.
  • Meet with foundation executives on and off campus.
  • Report regularly on progress towards goals, metrics and action plans set forth by the Executive Director with the expectation they are met annually.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Foundation Relations strategies with College, School and Units for submission of proposals for foundation prospects.
  • Provide guidance, information, and assistance to members of the University community on matters relating to support from foundations.
  • Work with Executive Director of Foundation Relations to develop and implement a fundraising plan, including strategies and a timeline for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of foundation prospects.
  • Ensure effective records maintenance, including timely filling of requests for prospect assignments, prospect strategies and contact reports, using the University’s prospect management systems.
  • Continually improve professional competency through participation in and/or leadership in professional organizational and other not-for profit organizations.
  • Meet regularly with the deans, department heads, program directors, faculty and other internal constituents to monitor and guide foundation relations activity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, including the demonstrated ability to communicate well in writing and make presentations before large groups.
  • Ability to interpret and articulate the mission of Purdue University and Purdue Research Foundation as needed.
  • Must be able to interact with stakeholders from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds.
  • The ability to represent the University/Foundation with tact and diplomacy at all time is required.
  • Sound judgment, initiative, and ability to collaborate effectively are required.
  • Excellent relationship-building, organizational and time-management skills are required.
  • Good computer skills are necessary.
  • Must have the ability to travel and valid driver’s license.
  • Regular and reliable attendance are requirements of this position.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five years of fundraising experience, specifically in foundation relations, with progressive responsibility.
  • Extensive proposal writing experience.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising.
