Essential Functions:

  • In cooperation with the Senior Associate Vice President for Advancement, plan and implement major gift activities aimed at meeting the Dean’s fundraising priorities, including strategies and a timeline for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual prospects/donors, with an expectation of raising a minimum of $1M annually.
  • Responsible for making a minimum of 150 visits annually with donors and prospects.
  • In consultation with the Directors of Corporate and Foundation Relations and the Senior Associate Vice President for Advancement, work closely with the directors of development for engineering schools to coordinate college advancement activities, including communications, alumni relations and development.

 Additional Responsibilities:

  • Orchestrate and execute the advancement of relationships with prospective donors through appropriate stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Identify, establish, and maintain personal contact with current and prospective donors whose interests and financial capacity have the greatest likelihood of meeting the Dean, College, and University fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate with appropriate advancement and academic staff to develop prospect strategies and build relationships.
  • Use the full complement of the fundraising process, including personal visits and “asks” to move relationships forward.
  • Set specific objectives to effectively advance toward solicitation of major gifts.
  • Prepare proposals and solicit prospects for gifts in support of the Dean’s strategic plan for fundraising priorities.
  • Provide support to and oversee development activities for areas within Engineering that do not have a dedicated development professional and for college-wide programs.
  • Work with the central planned giving staff to promote giving vehicles and enhance support by alumni and friends through planned gifts.
  • Facilitate involvement of major gift donors in College and School programs, including classroom presentations, student activities, and meetings with professors.
  • Host or co-host receptions and other donor events locally and nationally.
  • Oversee coordination of special projects, such as naming opportunities and donor recognition activities.
  • Working with the Engineering development team, develop and execute a major gift fundraising plan for the Dean’s top priorities, including strategies and a timeline for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of alumni and friends.
  • Assist with stewardship of gifts including acknowledgement process, coordinating recognition events, dedications, and working with the University Development Office on appropriate recognition.
  • Become familiar with and understand key initiatives of the College and University relating to faculty, students, instruction, and research.
  • Ensure effective records maintenance, including timely filing of requests for prospect assignments, prospect strategies and contact reports, using Purdue University’s prospect management system.
  • Report regularly on the progress toward the College’s major gift activities and annual action plan.
  • Become adept at using the Advancement database in support of major gift activities.
  • Work with the Engineering development team to ensure advancement goals and objectives are met through alumni and donor events such as Outstanding Alumni Awards and Distinguished Engineering Awards.
  • Serve as liaison to the College of Engineering communication staff toward alumni and donor recognition.
  • Serve as fundraising mentor and guide to the College of Engineering student organizations.
  • Co-supervise one clerical staff member.
  • Continually improve professional competency through participation and/or leadership in professional organizational and other not-for-profit organizations.


  • Familiarity with fundraising and opportunities in the engineering field preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to speak before large groups.
  • Ability to articulate the mission of Purdue University as needed.
  • Ability to interact with stakeholders from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to use good judgment, diplomacy, maintain confidentiality and represent the University with tact and diplomacy at all times.
  • Possess initiative and the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Excellent relationship building skills, organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects.
  • Must have strong problem solving and decision making skills, as well as attention to detail.
  • Desire to continuously improve professional competency through participation in professional development opportunities.
  • Ability to travel and perform evening and weekend duties as required.
  • Knowledge of Advance CS, Microsoft Outlook and Office Suite.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in development, including solicitation of major gifts in a non-profit organization required.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Marketing and communication experience preferred.
