Director of Regional Advancement

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Regional Advancement, the Director of Regional Advancement is part of the Purdue For Life Foundation (PFLF) team at Purdue University and is responsible for leading regional fundraising efforts from alumni, friends, and corporations for the assigned region (Northern California), along with increasing alumni participation to drive greater levels of connectivity, involvement, and support.

The Director manages and builds a portfolio of prospects while maintaining solid relationships with the Executive Director for Regional Advancement and Purdue for Life team to facilitate partnerships around goals, priorities, and outcomes, with the expectation of helping people who love Purdue University stay connected, get involved, and give back.

The Director is expected to reside and be established in the assigned region (Northern California).

Essential Functions

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors and prospects through visits and other forms of direct personal contact in accordance with performance targets set in collaboration with the Purdue for Life Foundation.
  • Lead regional advancement in major gift fundraising, partnerships with industry, and engagement.
  • Orchestrate and execute the advancement of relationships with prospective donors through appropriate stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Collaborate actively with PFLF colleagues in colleges, schools, units, and areas based on the prospect's expressed interests and relationships.
  • Identify new major gift prospects to add to a portfolio that broadly supports the most significant philanthropic priorities across Purdue University.
  • Develop a regional advancement leadership champions group comprised of alumni, parents, friends, and industry partners.
  • As opportunities become available, work with the president, provost, deans, and interdisciplinary initiative directors to cultivate and solicit prospects or cohost fundraising events involving top Purdue University academicians, leaders, and volunteers in fundraising efforts
  • Solicit, cultivate, and secure philanthropic support for Purdue University, emphasizing gifts of $100K+.
  • Actively collaborate with academic leadership, senior administrators, faculty, and development colleagues.
  • Frequent travel and/or evening and weekend duties are required.
  • Other projects as assigned. 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with appropriate development and academic staff to develop prospect strategies and build relationships.
  • Use the full complement of the fundraising process, including personal visits and asks to move relationships forward.
  • Set specific objectives to advance toward the solicitation of major gifts effectively.
  • Ensure appropriate coordination with the University's corporate and business partners and various unit and University constituencies.
  • Prepare proposals and solicit prospects for gifts in support of the University's strategic plan and fundraising priorities.
  • Cohost receptions and other events regionally.
  • Become familiar with and understand key initiatives of the University, faculty, students, instruction, and research.
  • Continually improve professional competency through training and participation in and/or leadership in professional, organizational, and other not-for-profit organizations. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, including the demonstrated ability to communicate well in writing and speak before large groups.
  • Ability to interpret and articulate the mission of Purdue University as needed.
  • Must be able to interact with stakeholders from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to use good judgment, diplomacy, maintain confidentiality and represent the University with tact and diplomacy at all times required.
  • Sound judgment, initiative, and ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team required.
  • Excellent relationship building, organizational skills, and time management skills required.
  • Knowledge of Salesforce, Microsoft Outlook and Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of philanthropy and fundraising principles.
  • Knowledge of finance, planned giving, alumni relations, corporate relations, and advancement communications preferred. 

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a related field
