Position Summary:

The Compliance Specialist will be responsible for providing support to and assisting the Compliance Manager with regulatory compliance research, provide day-to-day first line advisory support to business lines for all consumer compliance related matters. This position is responsible for collaborating with multiple departments to provide support, research, timely answers to complex questions, and compliance review of forms, letters, procedures, processes and marketing ads. The Compliance Specialist will serve on teams that work to develop new products and promotions. The ability to communicate effectively, work efficiently to meet deadlines and think creatively is key in this position. The Compliance Specialist will promote compliance awareness throughout the credit union by establishing and maintaining relationships with departments in a collaborative environment. This position will report directly to the Compliance Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

· Maintain working, up-to-date knowledge of consumer compliance regulations including any changes and additions that affect the credit union’s operations and be able to communicate requirements and assist with reviews of procedural changes to ensure compliance.

· Employ effective oral and written communication skills to review, paraphrase, summarize, and report on complex government rules, regulations, and guidance.

· Serve as the first contact for general compliance matters and respond to the day-to-day compliance questions submitted by various departments.

· Participate in the review/research of new products and services or the modification of existing products and services to ensure that compliance and operational risks are identified.

· Identify, develop, and document compliance issues and prepare recommendations for improvement; discuss deficiencies, recommend corrective action, and suggest improvements in operations to achieve organizational efficiencies and maintaining regulatory compliance.

· Develop compliance resources and contribute to compliance training materials.

· Participate in product and service implementation projects to ensure that regulatory compliance requirements are understood and incorporated throughout the product’s life cycle.

· Work with departments and Retail Coordinator to assess the compliance and operational risk implications resulting from changes made to policies, procedures, and processes.

· Maintain knowledge of policies, procedures, and systems in retail and operational areas in order to support compliance integration.

· Build and maintain constructive, collaborative working relationships characterized by credibility and mutual respect.

· Collaborate with Talent Development and Retail Coordinator on staff training regarding compliance regulations.

· Draft, review and update consumer disclosures for all services and products as required.

· Perform compliance reviews of advertising material and promotions.

· Perform compliance reviews of departmental procedures where required.

· Assist in the preparation and gathering of information for internal and external audits and NCUA examinations.

· Assist with drafting of procedures and policies for departments.

· Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements:

Education and Credentials

· Bachelor’s degree required; may substitute four years of compliance work experience at a financial institution in combination with college level coursework


· Minimum one to three years of compliance, risk or audit work experience required, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance.


· General understanding of federal and state laws and regulations applicable to credit unions or banks and willingness to obtain or maintain a compliance certification (CUCE or NCCO) within first two years of employment

· Compliance, legal, or academic research skills

· Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills

· Time management and prioritization skills, including ability to manage several competing assignments and complete them in an accurate and timely manner

· Ability to work well in a team environment and individually

· Superior ability to communicate verbally and in writing, in a professional manner

· Demonstrated ability to utilize a consultative approach with all levels of management.

· Ability to simplify and summarize complex information to all levels of management and staff

· Computer skills including Microsoft Office

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

· This job operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phone, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

· This position requires manual dexterity, the ability to lift files and open filing cabinets

· This position requires sitting, bending, stooping or standing as necessary
