Director of Communications and Media Relations

Essential Functions

  • Lead Purdue Research Foundation (PRF) communications and earned media strategies including developing, implementing and managing a targeted and sustainable strategic communications plan that promotes the PRF brand and its subsidiaries to local, national and global audiences through earned media.
  • Work with PRF leadership team and PRF team leaders in Marketing and Business Development to develop and implement marketing and public relations activities to advance PRF’s strategic direction and positioning.
  • Responsible for PRF communications activities, including internal and external audiences, interactions with media and preparation of accountability reports.
  • Responsible for crisis management communications for internal and external audiences in coordination with Purdue issues and crisis management team.
  • Provide leadership necessary to achieve PRF's goal of supporting the University's strategic mission.
  • Prepare and maintain budget for Communications department.


External media relations

  • Lead efforts in the generation of news coverage and opinion columns focusing on technology commercialization, research park growth, announcements, special events, including production of video, e-newsletters, Web sites, social media, and other avenues of outreach.
  • Maintain and establish ongoing relationships with representatives in the fields of media, public relations and related areas.

Internal communications

  • Lead efforts for media workshops, award nominations, e-newsletter and annual reports.
  • Edit other PRF departmental communications as requested.


  • Manage technology transfer media relations, news generation and intellectual property promotion.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned by the President.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), organizational, planning, creative thinking, ‎and marketing material design.
  • Strategic thinking skills essential, accompanied with an understanding of the fundraising profession.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize work to meet deadlines, ‎and produce high quality work with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated good judgment, diplomacy, ‎persuasive ability, public relations, and the ability to drive ‎positive results within and across organizational boundaries.
  • Ability to work productively under the pressure of tight deadlines.‎
  • Personal computer and related ‎software skills necessary.
  • Regular and reliable attendance are requirements of this position.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of five years marketing experience in a professional environment.
