DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Perform prompt and competent completion of analyses of commercial viability and strategies to enable timely technology transfer of Purdue intellectual property, primarily in areas of electrical engineering, cybersecurity, big data and/or mass spectrometry.
  • Actively identify potential, external licensing partners in industry, government, and not-for-profit sectors.
  • Conduct research to inform development of and drafting of business terms and legal license contracts to enable transfer of Purdue technology to licensees.
  • Manage all delegated Purdue technology translation and transfer responsibilities efficiently and to the benefit of Purdue.
  • Work with counsel to structure, draft, negotiate and execute transactional contracts to effect complex commercial licensing arrangements
  • Work cooperatively with Purdue inventors, OTC legal staff, and outside advisors on protection of Purdue intellectual property.
  • Actively seek and manage relationships with University management and existing PRF licensees.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, manage and accountable for budget expenditures associated with all assigned duties.
  • Organize and maintain effective communication with members of local, regional and national business and venture capital communities.

 REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of technology transfer within industry and/or academia required.
  • Strong negotiation and diplomatic skills required.
  • Strong legal contract comprehension required.
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining industry relationships.  
  • Business development skillset required. 
  • Commitment to higher education and the values of scientific research and discovery for societal benefit.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property protection laws, including patent prosecution, corporate structures, and investment models required.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, computer, written/verbal communication skills required.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Candidate must be comfortable interacting with people from varied disciplines and with managing multiple complex projects.
  • Occasional travel required.
  • Regular and reliable attendance are requirements of this position.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering or computer science.
  • M.S. or higher, Ph.D. preferred in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering or computer science. MBA or JD acceptable.
    • Three years of business development, technology licensing or product development/marketing experience in a technology-intensive industry mentioned below with at least two years in technology commercialization desired.
    • Strong technical and business development knowledge in some fields including mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, software/hardware, big data, semiconductors, power systems, renewable energy, cybersecurity or device communication.
    • Strong working knowledge of intellectual property protection methods, contract law, and government laws and regulations related to technology transfer is required.
    • Industry new product development and/or legal contract experience preferable.
    • Experience in negotiation of government contracts preferred.
