Business Development Manager-Life Sciences, Office of Technology Commercialization

Essential Functions:

  • Identify and secure commercialization partners for Purdue technologies in the area of life sciences, pharma, and biotechnology.
  • Perform prompt and competent completion of analyses of commercial viability and strategies to enable timely technology transfer of Purdue intellectual property (IP), primarily in the life sciences.
  • Work closely with innovators to develop commercialization and IP strategies.
  • Perform technology valuations, market analyses and competitive landscapes.
  • Promote and market Purdue life science technologies to commercial partners.
  • Draft, negotiate and execute transactional contracts including, license, option and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise in the fields of drug discovery and development, diagnostics, biotechnology, and research tools for the OTC business development and IP team.
  • Share knowledge about OTC processes and the Purdue’s IP policy with Purdue innovators.
  • Identify Purdue technologies for entrepreneurship activities and support them as necessary.
  • Manage relationships with commercial partners (licensees, sponsors and investors).
  • Develop a long-term strategy for third party relationships to make a strong impact on the commercialization ecosystem.
  • Foster technology commercialization in life sciences by ensuring effective communication, dissemination of information related to IP and new ideas with Purdue faculty and licensees. 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, manage and account for budget expenditures associated with all assigned duties.
  • Provide input and guidance on IP matters in sponsored research agreements and industry collaborations.
  • Work closely with members of the entrepreneurship and venture capital communities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge in pharma and biotech licensing.
  • Strong working knowledge of intellectual property protection methods, contract law, and government laws and regulations related to technology transfer is required.
  • Related industry experience highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of technology transfer within industry and/or academia preferred.
  • Strong negotiating and agreement drafting experience desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with inventors and industry
  • Must be a highly self-motivated professional with exceptional ability to identify priorities and complete projects.
  • Understanding of intellectual property protection mechanisms and strategy desirable.
  • Excellent team work, organizational, problem-solving, computer, written/verbal communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Candidate must be comfortable interacting with people from varied disciplines at various leadership levels in an organization and with managing multiple complex projects.
  • Occasional travel required.
  • Regular and reliable attendance are requirements of this position.



  • Advanced degree in life sciences and/or MBA.
  • Three years of business development, technology licensing or product development/marketing experience in a technology-intensive industry, preferably in the life science, pharma, or biotechnology sector.
  • Industry new product development and/or legal contract experience preferable.
  • Experience in negotiation of government contracts preferred.
  • Must have proven experience in negotiating and closing technology transfer transactions involving patents and other intellectual property by identifying prospects and negotiating business terms and license agreements with startups, existing large and small companies, and other entities.
  • Demonstrated successful experience marketing scientific technologies to industry.
